New Years in Japan: Hatsumoude

I went home for the holidays this year, and had a wonderful vacation with my family and friends in Portland, Oregon. I also got to meet my nephew James for the first time! For those who don't know, James was supposed to be born on December 29th, just in time for me to see him when I came home. Instead, he was born about 3 months early, in September. It's been tough living so far away from my family during all that, so it was really great to finally be there and see him! He was in the hospital until right after I returned to Japan; he's at home now with his mom, my sister Rose.

We always say, "Families that cosplay together, stay together."

Costume Journal: Ice Cream

So I thought it would be fun for me and maybe useful to some of you to occasionally post "Costume Journals" about some of my projects. I think they'll be less tutorials and more logs of my process in creating something. But please feel free to ask questions! Also, I am really interested in hearing other cosplayers' opinions- comments, criticism, how you would do something differently, etc. Please share your thoughts!

As I mentioned in the last post, my friends and I chose a dessert theme for this year's Santa Photo. Arika had made some cute designs along this theme, and I liked her take on "Ice Cream".

The very first thing I do when I begin any costuming project, no matter how big or small, is make my own reference picture. Usually this is quickly hand-drawn,  as a way for me to think through the pieces and the steps of making them. I also take a lot of notes about materials, colors etc. and make decisions about where to put buttons, zippers, and so forth. Arika's design didn't show the back, so I also had to design that. I also figured out yardage and costs.

Costumes: Santa Photos

Four years ago around Christmas time my friends and I were thinking it'd be awesome to have more cosplay outings- basically just an excuse to go out in costume and do something fun for the hell of it. My friend Arika had the awesome idea of dressing-up and going to get our photo taken with the local-mall Santa. And thus a new holiday tradition was born.

Book Reviews!

Hi again! So I went home for Christmas, spent two weeks back in Portland which flew by in a haze of good food, friends, family and trips to Powells Books. Which means: book reviews!

Since I can't bring myself to write a short review, I will probably break this up into a series of posts. I've been meaning to start posting reviews on this journal for ages, so I've got a bit of a back log of good books to get through. I'll try posting two or three at a time every week or so. Also, the promised cosplay post is coming soon, for real!
